On August 26, 2016, The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) held a launch ceremony for the first India EHS+ Center in Pune, marking the official transition from the Center’s pilot phase to a fully-operational environment, health & safety training center. The Center is initiated by the Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC), in partnership with Symbiosis Institute of International Business with support from Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Walt Disney Company, General Electric and MacArthur Foundation.
The launch ceremony highlighted challenges and best practices in integrating sustainability across supply chains in India, and the Center’s unique approach to enhance the capacity of Indian industries to improve performance in sustainable manufacturing. The event was attended by around 300 guests. The largest proportions were from international and national brands manufacturing in Pune and Mumbai industrial regions, with representation from industry associations, national and international NGOs, and foreign diplomats
The following dignitaries spoke at the launching ceremony: USAID Mission Director to India, Ambassador Jonathan Addleton; Vice Chancellor of SIU, Dr. Rajani Gupte; Chief Purchase Officer of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Mr. Hemant Sikka; Country Director of MacArthur Foundation’s India Office, Ms. Moutushi Sengupta; Chief of Manufacturing Operations Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Mr. Vijay Kalra.
The launch ceremony was followed by a seminar on “Integrating Sustainability in Supply-chain”. Senior industry representatives and EHS personnel took part in two panel discussions on “Integrating Sustainability in Supply-chain - Global perspective” and “Challenges to adoption of EHS best practices in India”.
